Roundhouse Kick

The roundhouse kick when preformed properly is one of the most powerful strikes that exist.

Some people believe that this type of technique is too fancy, elaborate, and not practical. This misconception may be due to movies where people do a very high or spinning roundhouse kick.

While these are not bad, they are difficult for most people to do effectively with speed and or strength.

The fastest, easiest and most powerful roundhouse kick is the one that is below that waist of the person kicking. If the roundhouse kick is higher then the waist of the person performing the strike, it looses power and take more time and flexibility.

It can be used very effectively by targeting the lower targets of the inner or outer thighs or more importantly to target the nerves that supply these large muscles. It can also be used to target the knees and cause serious damage.

You can use it as a very effective distracting strike from your front leg or as a very effective power strike from your rear most leg.

A low roundhouse kick is also good because many people while fighting or sparing are too concentrated on their upper bodies and a low attack may be unexpected and harder to block.

The reason the roundhouse kick is one of the more powerful strikes is because it is a whole body motion. The roundhouse kick using the back or front leg starts with bringing the leg up, turning the non-kicking foot so that is parallel with the object that is being struck, and extending the kicking leg while rotating the upper body through. This, if done correctly, can generate a powerful force able to stun or knock down most opponents.

An important note to remember while performing the roundhouse kick or any strike is to aim at least six inches past the target. This will ensure that this technique strikes through the opponent, not just hit the outside of the target without the maximum force that could have been applied had the aiming been correct.

Aside from points of aim, the roundhouse kick offers several options for the person kicking. The target can be struck with the top of the foot, shin, or the ball of the foot when the foot is pointed instead of flat.

All of these options offer distinct advantages. Striking with the top of the foot offers a greater reach if the opponent is further away, while striking with the shin creates a stronger force since the shin is a stronger and harder then the top of the foot. Striking with the shin also provides a larger area to strike and therefore there is a greater chance of making contact with the target.

Another option is to strike with the ball of the foot. This option allows the kicker to penetrate into deep tissue or access nerves more effectively. While the roundhouse kick can look fancy it is very practical, simple, and powerful while offering many different options to the kicker on what part of the foot or leg to use.

For these reasons, the roundhouse kick is one of the best options to use whether sparring or if involved in a real fight.

Simple kicks for self defense

Simple kicks for self defense

Your feet can be very effective tools for striking. There are many Simple kicks for self defense that can be carried out by virtually anyone. With a little practice, you can be very effective with them.

Strikes with the feet need not be aimed high or be complex. There is no need for jumping or spinning types of kick. In fact, fine motor skills like that, cannot even be carried out during the adrenal rush of an attack by most people.

As with all self defense, techniques should consist of gross motor skills. These are simple body movements that can be carried out by virtually anyone. All of your kicks can be aimed below the waist, this helps you maintain your balance and enables you to deliver your kicks with power.

Some examples of Simple kicks for self defense are firstly the shin kick. This is just like kicking a soccer ball with the inside of your foot, in this case you’re targeting the shin with your foot. This can cause a great deal of pain, especially if you are wearing a sturdy pair of shoes.

Next is the front kick, this is simply executed by lifting your knee and extending your foot towards the intended target. The sidekick is carried out by lifting your knee and extending your foot to the side of your body, targeting the attackers knees or thighs.

A simple version of a back kick is to lift your knee and extend your heel to an intended target to your rear. Strike the target with the heel part of you foot if possible.

Simple kicks for self defense can be made to be more effective with a little applied knowledge. Twist the body, rotate the hips, strike through the target and target the weak or sensitive areas of the body. These are all effective additions in simple kicks for self defense.

There are several sensitive targets below the waist which are very effective. These targets would include the groin, inner or outer thighs, knees, shins and the instep.

Different parts of the foot can be used for different kicks. For example, the toes could be used for a round kick to thigh. The instep could also be used for a round kick. Your shin could also be used for such a kick. Other simple kicks for self defense would include the ball and heel on the bottom of the Foot.

It does help to learn an effective stance, from which to strike. An effective stance, not only disguises your intention to strike, it puts you in a more protected position and allows you to exert maximum power into your strike.

You can kick effectively, from your front leg or from your rear leg. Generally, fast distracting strikes will be executed using your front leg which would normally be closer to the attacker. Your rear leg, normally further from the attacker, can be used to execute your power kicks.

Unlike most martial arts, you are already capable of carrying out most necessary self defense techniques right now, you just haven’t been shown what they are just yet. It still takes practice to build confidence and give you the ability to carry them out in a given situation.

It is always important to remember, that most people are not capable of carrying out fine or complex motor skills in a high stress situation like that of an attack. Ensure all your strikes, only involve simple body movements and you practice them regularly.

The Groin Kick

When I ask the question in Self Defense classes, “Who knows any effective techniques that we could use in a self defense situation? The most popular answer by far is “groin kick” or some other preferred term for the same technique.

Virtually everyone knows this as an effective target to go after. Any man can tell you that it certainly does hurt and could leave you incapacitated for quite some time. Even very light strikes in these areas can have a long lasting effect.

In a Self Defense situation, you would imagine that a groin kick would be a sensible option. However, there is a drawback. The human body is equipped with an instinctive reflex mechanism that will help protect this area at lightening speed.

The groin kick can be .....

#9 - Targeting weak and sensitive areas

How to Overcome Larger, Stronger People, Regardless of Your Size and Strength

Targeting weak and sensitive areas

The human body is full of weak and senstive areas. The two targets considered Primary Targets are the eyes and the throat. It does not take a genius to work out why either.

Without his eyes, that attacker cannot see and therefore cannot fight. Without his throat intact, the attacker cannot breathe and therefore cannot fight.

It does not take much of a strike to seriously injure a persons eyes, it does not take much to seriously injure a persons throat.

All this being said, the situation has to be pretty serious to justify you striking to the eyes or to the throat. If you feel that your life is in danger then you can do whatever it takes in order to defend yourself and preserve your own life.

Strikes from close quarters and from a submussive stance (as described in the previous posting) are highly likely to reach their target. As the Primary targets are so senstive, even light or partially stopped strikes will be effective.

strikes to these areas will at minimum create an opportunity to put some distance between you an the attacker.

#8 - Body Mechanics in Striking

How to Overcome Larger, Stronger People, Regardless of Your Size and Strength

Body Mechanics in Striking

Body Mechanics play an important role in getting the most out of your strikes. There are 2 basic types of strike:

1 - Distracting strikes that carry the perception of speed
2 - Power Strikes

Some methods of making your strikes more effective are:

#1 - Strikes appear fast and are much more likely to land when you use the closest tool to the closest target as an initial strike. An open hand that is 6 inches away from the attackers face will reach a target on the face far quicker than say an attempted round kick to the head. Even if the blow is not particularly hard, it can target sensitive areas such as the eyes for great effect. As it only has a very short distance to travel, it is very unlikely that the attacker could stop such a blow before it lands. Action is quicker than reaction

#2 - Power strikes should carry body weight. If it's a strike with the fist, open hands or elbows, rotating the hips, waist and shoulders. Your Power kicks should also use power generated through your hips.

#3 - Aiming about 6 inches through the target will make your strike more effective.

#4 - Aiming for weak or senstive areas increases the effect of the strike.

#5 - Striking from an unlikely position such as a submissive stance can catch the attacker off guard. Unexpected strikes carry more weight.

Self Defense Stances

Your stance, believe it or not can play a major factor in Self Defense for several reasons:

#1 - Look Small and weak so that your strikes are not expected
#2 - Set up your Strikes
#3 - To be a firm foundation from which to strike effectively
#4 - A body position that will allow you to defend yourself
#5 - A position from which you can move quickly to strike, defend or escape

The Self Defense Stances you need to learn are the Interview Stance and the Defensive Stance.

#6 Increase Awareness

How to Overcome Larger, Stronger People, Regardless of Your Size and Strength

Increase Awareness

With some reading and research, you can greatly increase your awareness. Whether it is a list of do's and don'ts or stories of other people's fortunes and misfortunes, you can learn from the information and their experience.

Increase awareness and you will make much less of a target. Predators are not looking for a fight bit easy pickings, if you look switched and confident, it's less likely that you will become that target.

It is easier said than done but if you can avoid being in a vulnerable situation in the first place then you are far less likely to get attacked. Some of the information that you read or hear will be obvious, even common sense, however, what may seem obvious to you may not be to others so never be shy in passing good information on to others.

Don't only be aware of potential situations that are going on but be aware of your immediate surroundings. In different locations, your level of awareness can change. Sitting at home behind locked doors, you can usually afford to beat a low level of alert. When you step outside into the street, that level of alertness may need to elevate a little. When you go to an area that you are not familiar with or you know the area is a likelyhood for trouble, then you need to be on maximum alert, looking out for people, strange movement, strange actions.

#5 Be Pre-Emptive

How to Overcome Larger, Stronger People, Regardless of Your Size and Strength

Be Pre-Emptive (Hit or be Hit!)

Many people would assume that you have to be physically struck before you can physically respond in Self Defense. Let me tell you now that this is totally untrue, well certainly in any civilized country of the World anyway. If you could only respond after you had been attacked, then it could simply be too late by then.

In most civilized countries around the World, you have the right to defend yourself. However, as this article is not intended as legal advice, I would advise that you check the Self Defense laws for your Country, State, Province or area.

You do not have to wait to be struck in order to defend yourself ................

#4 Control Fear and Avoid Panic

How to Overcome Larger, Stronger People, Regardless of Your Size and Strength

Control Fear and Avoid Panic

One of our biggest enemies during a conflict can often times be fear. The fear of getting hurt, the fear of getting killed, fear of getting raped and so on, your life flashes before your very eyes. The fact that you have children, family or friends that you may never see again right in your thoughts, can trigger fear’s biggest ally, panic.

On top of all the confusion, this fear triggers the release of adrenalin into your system. Your body shivers, your legs tremble, you break into a cold sweat, heart pounding, focused vision, increased heartbeat and your mouth as dry as sandpaper. Your body is reacting by pumping blood into your arms and legs, ready for you to take action. I’m sure that you’ve heard it before but your body is getting you ready for “fight or flight”.

We can control our emotions and...........................

#3 Trust Your Gut Feeling

How to Overcome Larger, Stronger People, Regardless of Your Size and Strength

Trust Your Gut Feeling

Many survivors of violent attacks have one thing in common; they knew something was wrong, even before it actually happened.

We are all born with this gift. Some people call it your gut feeling, others call it intuition. It is the ability to know something without knowing why.

It is one thing to have this ability but another to actually trust it and act upon it. Don’t just hear the signals that are being picked up but listen to them and take action. Use that feeling as an excuse to at least assess your environment and take the necessary precautions or evasive actions.

You have this very special gift, it’s an internal feeling that we all experience at some point.........

#2 Know Your Limits

How to Overcome Larger, Stronger People, Regardless of Your Size and Strength

Know your Limits!

Have you ever really considered, to what extremes you would go, in order to protect yourself? Everyone is different on this level, everyone has a different idea and that’s fine but I do urge you to consider what your limits are.

You must ask yourself “How far would I go to protect myself? Could I do whatever it takes if I was put in a position of life or death?

Many people will be thinking “of course I could it if I had to”. However, not only is everyone different but every situation is different. You have to know in your mind that if your life is threatened then you can and will do whatever it takes to protect yourself.

Do you have the intestinal fortitude to stick your fingers deep into an attacker’s eyes?

Again, many people are more willing to protect their children than themselves, they would not think twice about throwing themselves into the path pf danger for their child. This type of emotion is so strong,.............
